Wear of Materials 2009 - Las Vegas, Nevada

It was with great pleasure that I attended the Wear of Materials 2009 conference which brought together the friction and tribology community. The conference took place in Las Vegas, Nevada between 19 and 23 of April 2009.
The conference started with a plenary talk about Wear mechanisms and mitigation strategies in microsystems presented by Dr. Mike Dugger from Sandia National Labs. This was a very interesting talk which described the path for future research in the field of MEMS wear.
Several sessions on wear of thin films and coatings, wear of polymers and sliding wear of metals and alloys followed.
Another interesting plenary talk was conducted by Prof. Allan Matthews from the University of Sheffield, UK. Aspects of tribological coating design and selection were disscused and analyzed.

I had the opportunity to present my work which was entitled: "Dry and wet sliding wear of ITO coated PET components used in flexible optoelectronic applications". This study will aid towards designing more reliable and wear resistant flexible devices that mwy be used in harsh environments and demanding applications such as space and solar energy.

Also, another paper was presented by Aaron Kessman, a PhD student from our lab, entitled: "Tribology of water and oil repelent sol-gel coatings for optical applications".
Nicholas Morris, another PhD student from our lab, presented a poster entitled: "Scratch and indentation of ITO oxide films on polyester substrates".

Dr. Stephen Kukureka from the University of Birmingham, UK, presented a paper entitled: "The wear and friction of polyamide 46 and polyamide 46/aramid-fibre composites in sliding-rolling contact.

A number of interesting papers were also presented during the course of the conference and awards for best paper and poster were presented during the conference lunch on Wednesday. A poetic about tribology was also presented, during the conference luncheon, by Dr. P.J. Blau.

The next WOM conference will take place in Philadelphia in 2011. See you there!!!

Dr. Konstantinos Sierros was promoted to Research Assistant Professor. He specializes in materials for energy efficient, flexible optoelectronic devices. His main research efforts are in the fields of mechanical properties, tribology and reliability of thin hybrid materials used in flexible optoelectronic applications.Dr. Sierros works in Dr. Cairns’ research group, which is developing tailored functional materials for energy applications. Dr. Sierros is also responsible for the MAE analytical microscopy facility, which includes an SEM equipped with EDX analysis, a surface profilometer and optical microscopes. He will also play a role in the advancement of the energy materials science and engineering (EMSE) program at WVU. Dr. Sierros will teach mechanical engineering classes.Dr. Konstantinos Sierros earned his Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham UK in 2006. He joined WVU in March 2007 as a Post Doctoral Fellow with responsibility for the MAE - SEM facility. His research interests include thin film deposition, mechanics of flexible optoelectronic materials, thin film tribology and microscopy of materials. He is a member of the Society of Information Display (SID), Materials Research Society (MRS), Institute of Physics (IOP), and Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE).

Flexible LEDs

One of the projects that I am involved at the moment is the research and development of a flexible light-sheet for automotive applications.

Developing flexible LED lighting is a positive step towards energy saving.

According to C. J. Humphreys [1]: "Electricity generation is the main source of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions and lighting uses 1/5 of its output. Solid state lighting using light emitting diodes LEDs) is poised to reduce this value by at least 50%. LED lighting will provide reductions of at least 10% in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from power stations within the next 5-10 years. Even greater reductions are likely on a 10-20 year timescale"

It is then important to consider LED lighting as an energy efficient alternative. Here at WVU we are working with companies in order to develop flexible LED light-strips that are used, mainly, in automotive applications. At the moment, we are working with Grote Industries http://www.grote.com/ and Articulated Technologies http://www.articulatedtechnologies.com/

There are several chalenges to be takled such as materials compatibility issues, flexible stack architecture, stress- corrosion effects, mechanical mismatches etc. However, it is important to note that significant progress has already been achieved.

It was with great pleasure that I attended the MRS Spring 2008 meeting that took place last week in San Francisco.
I gave an oral presentation during Symposium J titled: Mechanical integrity of thin hybrid components used in flexible optoelectronic devices.

Attending the MRS Spring 2008 meeting

Generally the presentation was about the mechanical proerties and reliability of ITO coated polyesters. These thin hybrid material systems are used in many flexible display and solar cell technologies as a base flexible substrate onto which the subsequent layers are deposited by physical and/or chemical methods. They are unusual systems in mechanical terms since a hard and brittle thin functional layer (ITO) is deposited on a flexible polymeric substrate. It is therefore of paramount importance to study the mechanical behaviour of such systems under different deformation modes and stress states. Generally the conference was very interesting with the main theme being Harnessing Materials for Energy.
I very much enjoyed the plenary talk given by Professor Michael Graetzel from EPFL. Professor Graetzel was instrumental in describing his discovery; a new type of solar cell based on dye-synthesized mesoscopic oxide particles. He succesfully pointed out the use of nanomaterials in energy conversion devices. Harvard Professor George M. Whitsides gave an energy overview and examined issues related with materials and their role regarding energy needs.

Symposium M: Materials and technology for flexible, conformable and stretchable sensors and transistors. This was an interesting session that I really enjoyed. Efforts to create new stretchable materials are in progress. During this session I had the opportunity to meet and discuss thin film mechanics with prominent scientists of the field. Symposium T: Nanoscale tribology-Impact for materials and devices. Tribology, in all scales, is a lifelong research interest of mine. Therefore, it was a great joy to attend this symposium. I also had the opportunity to meet again with Shefield Professor Graham J. Legget who gave an interesting talk on friction force microscopy of monolayers, fibres and nanostructures.

The poster session was excellent and encompassed themes ranging from energy materials to molecular motors and nanomachines.

Our poster, Symposium FF, titled: Electrically switchable liquid crystal polymer rod actuators was particularly popular among the MRS attendees. The succes of the poster was the result of an effort made by our group's MSc student Matt Shafran, myself, MAE Professor Wade Huebsch and of course our group leader and MAE Professor Darran Cairns.

My name is Konstantinos Sierros and I am currently serving as Research Assistant Professor in Materials Science at West Virginia University working with Dr Darran Cairns.

I hold a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK and a joint MSc in Polymer Engineering and Science from Aston University and the University of Birmingham, UK.

After earning my PhD in Materials Science from the University of Birmingham, UK, I decided to join WVU's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department in order to enhance my research and teaching experience.
